How Safe Is Your Luggage From Theft?

How Safe Is Your Luggage From Theft?

By Mirela Necsutu, Fri, Oct 4, 2013

It happens more often than you think: cameras, watches and other pricey items are lifted from bags or suitcases as unsuspecting travellers scramble to make their flights. In fact, airport thefts are on the rise.

But by understanding how and why these crimes happen, you’re less likely to become a victim. Read on to find out the most common ways valuables are snatched by thieves and what you can do to help prevent it from happening to you.

Items are at risk at every step

Your baggage is handled by several airport employees. First, it’s checked at the desk, then is taken to TSA by airline staff. It’s rooted through by security, then passed off to tarmac staff. Received again by new tarmac staff, new handlers and eventually returned to you. Not to mention, if lost, the bags are also touched by claim staff and even airline delivery professionals.

Many of these employees are not monitored, so there are plenty of opportunities for less scrupulous workers to snatch things out of bags. In 2009, the Wall Street Journal reported on a theft ring that involved baggage handlers who allegedly were sifting through luggage that was already on the plane, taking jewelry and electronics.

Thefts bring little compensation

Airlines all have similar policies regarding thefts – the most expensive items are included in a list of things not reimbursed. For instance, US Airways says in their contract that by forfeiting baggage, or checking it, any camera equipment, cash, jewellery and other expensive belongings will not be replaced, even if taken by airline staff.

Luggage is more at-risk in certain countries

Recently, thefts at Nigerian airports have been rising to the point where things go missing in these small hubs every day. More than 200 items are also reported daily in the JFK Airport as ‘lost’ or stolen.

Domestically in the U.S., most flyers can receive up to $3,300 in baggage claims if their stuff is lost or stolen. But when you fly internationally, that number dramatically drops. In most cases, you can only claim about $9 per pound. Understand these terms and pack accordingly, which will be your best defense.

Know the drill and protect yourself

It goes without saying that if you have anything on you that’s not easily replaced, don’t lose sight of it. But if say your golf clubs, camping gear or electronics do go missing, know how to handle it calmly and quickly.

Immediately go to the claims office, no matter the airline, and file a claim while at the airport. Usually these offices are right next to baggage claim. Ask for a number to call, and continue to call every day, until the issue is resolved. Also ask for stolen-item paperwork so you don’t have to hunt for a printer if it’s needed later.

And beforehand, take a quick photo of your bag’s contents for proof of any item that might be a target. Have documentation of receipts as well for faster handling of claims. And make sure your bag is distinguishable, in case you need to search though a warehouse to find lost luggage.
